Cathie’s long awaited new CD is here!
It has been seven years since Cathie Ryan released a studio recording of new material and Through Wind and Rain proves the old Irish proverb true: Is maith an scéalaí an aimsir – time is a good storyteller. While Ryan’s voice still rings with the luminous clarity of her earliest work, this collection is truly about the stories: 11 handpicked songs of love, loss, and hope, sung with the hard-won wisdom of a woman who has lived them. It is Ryan’s most deeply affecting work to date.
Recorded in Ireland and America, Through Wind and Rain features Ryan’s distinctive mix of original, traditional, and contemporary tunes. In addition to unearthing gems from Irish and American song traditions, Ryan has a gift for creating her own heart-stirring originals and for showcasing writers whose work deserves wider recognition. Ryan and her band — Patsy O’Brien on guitar and vocals, Matt Mancuso on fiddle and octave mandolin, and Brian Melick on percussion — shine in the sensitive and sure arrangements, along with a veritable who’s-who of traditional musicians including John Doyle, Donogh Hennessy, Michelle Mulcahy, Joanie Madden, Seamus Egan, Steve Holloway, Pauline Scanlon, Éilís Kennedy, Aoife O’Donovan, Michael McGoldrick, Niall Vallely, and more.
Time is indeed a good storyteller. The long-awaited Through Wind and Rain is a formidable collection of songs from one of our finest singer-songwriters, and well worth the wait.
Cathie Ryan’s new CD, Through Wind and Rain, is set for worldwide release on September 19, 2012 on Mo Leanbh Records.
